CHAPTER TEN

RELAXATION

They pulled into their driveway a few minutes later and began the process of bringing the groceries in. As they did, Dom looked out over his neighborhood. His house was the second at the beginning of the street that extended about two miles away and ended in the beginnings of a big forest. He’d taken a fair number of walks to the end of the road and into that forest, just exploring around on his days off when anyone else in his life was too busy to hang out. There was something very appealing about nature, and about forests.

But there was something ominous about his quiet little street just beyond the city limits right now. Dom knew some of it had to do with the fact that it was November, winter was approaching, and the sky was covered in dark gray clouds. He also knew that some of it had to do with the fact that they’d been dealing with a worldwide sickness for years, and they had just initiated another lockdown. It was possible that this extra dread he was feeling was related to what the cop had told him. What did the man know?

What secret knowledge had they passed along to those in positions of authority that had leaked down to the cops and the paramedics and the military?

Was it just nothing? Paranoia of one man, or even several?

Misinterpretation?

Or was something big coming?

Something different.

He knew there was no way to really know until it actually happened, but his own paranoia was growing, not dissipating. He wrestled with himself and these notions as he finished bringing the groceries in. Anya was laying on the couch topless, smoking a joint and playing video games.

“Wow,” he said as he came, “I see you’ve already settled firmly into your role.”

“Is this too, like, am I assuming too much?” she asked, pausing the game.

“Are you kidding? Do you have any idea how fucking awesome it is to come home to a hot, topless chick smoking weed and playing video games in my place? Plus, like I said before, this is your house too, now.”

She laughed. “I guess that makes sense. You want any help with anything?”

“We’re good,” Dom replied as they headed into the kitchen.

“You want me to help put stuff away?” Chloe asked.

“I got it. Why don’t you go chill out with Anya?”

“Okay.” She hugged him from behind, then left the kitchen.

Dom ruminated while he put everything away, taking his time as he also took the opportunity to check over what supplies he did have. He didn’t like what he saw. He’d let his supplies get low because he’d been ordering takeout so often recently. He spent an extra half an hour going through his kitchen, throwing out anything he found that was out of date and beginning to mold or smell. He finished it off by taking out the garbage and tossing it into the can secured in the backyard, then replacing the bag. After that, he headed into the living room.
